This artwork ”Amplified Routines” is an unattended sound installation (sound art) that captures
the everyday life of Toyooka in the mind through sound and light. By allowing visitors to amplify
their own memories through the installation, they can experience the opportunity to recall
memories that resonate with the sounds interspersed throughout the piece, even as the scenery
fades and diminishes in the flow of daily repetition.
Sound is produced by objects or environments. For example, the sound of a door closing is
caused by a door, just as noise is caused by a construction site. Without the actual source in
front of us, it can be difficult to recognize the association between the sound and the object, and
if we are unaware of the source, we might either experience stress from the strange sound or not
notice it at all.
The sounds and sights of events, unfamiliar places, and diverse cultures scattered throughout
Toyooka City will evoke the viewer’s experiences. At the same time, they will be enriched as
viewers draw and write down their everyday memories. The blend of human memories with the
artwork, culture, and nature will persist as chimes in our daily lives.

Pagkalinga is a Tagalog word for caring or to care. This performance work explores various rituals of caring or pagkalinga based on the Filipino culture of the artist James Harvey Estrada. Since 2018, James has been exploring performance rituals based on his experiences and explorations of spirituality. He developed his prayer rituals at a very young age and has explored this style through healing and meditative performance. In his recent research on performing presence, he tried to read and explore the site’s energy and history toward a ceremony of communal care with the audience.

James collaborates with Masashi Nukata to give sound and music in this piece. James and Masashi worked together in Fure Fure Ostrich!! Hayupang Die-Bow-Ken! in 2020 and 20221 for the Tokyo Festival. Working together for two years in a project they created a bond of care in their works. The two then explore this bond of care through the body and musicality.

Intertwining the Filipino culture of care with James Harvey Estrada and the Japanese musical sensibilities of Masashi Nukata we will witness a caring performance work crafted in friendship and togetherness.

An entirely unique genre, Manual Theatre is a fusion of figure theatre, narrative theatre and gestural dance realised with bare hands; U.MANI.TÀ’s shows use a light frame as a stage and ‘handmade’ characters as actors, realised through fingerplay. The show is based on a series of ‘handmade’ characters, realised through fingerplay. The hands of Jacopo Teardi #quellodellemani tell stories, dance and interact with the audience in a show full of twists, laughter, surprises and poetry!

Jacopo Tealdi (Turin, 1986) is an actor, mime, writer, director and researcher. He has developed manual theatre with shows that have toured the world, acting with great simplicity with his bare hands.

“Placing Shoes in Living Spaces and Contemplating ‘Lives’: An Object Theater Performance”

We live with shoes.

Footsteps, stride length, walking speed.
Shoes are eloquent, conveying the personality, circumstances, and life of the wearer. This production focuses on the intimate relationship between shoes and humans, and by placing shoes in ordinary living spaces, it highlights the lives of the people living there.

For example, in front of benches, vending machines, and bulletin boards.
What kind of urban life emerges when shoes are placed in these spots? It might vary depending on the viewer. However, the scenery likely reflects the impressions that the audience unconsciously holds of the town and the people living there.

An object theater piece by the Ghost_company Ashimoto, rethinking the lives and impressions of the town through shoes.

This is the world premiere of a new performance by Mi-Mi-Bi, a contemporary dance company consisting of performers with bodies which experience disabilities within life and society.

Their previous work, Unseen Beauty, presented as part of Toyooka Theater Festival 2022 Fringe Selection, explored the theme of “journey.” This work centers on the theme of “island,” shifting perspective from a position of movement to one of living in a specific place. While drawing on their own experiences, Mi-Mi-Bi present dance that is inspired by the struggles and relentlessness that come with life within the natural world, as well as within new encounters with others; the resilience to confront such difficulties; wisdom; ways of carrying oneself with humor; and the unwavering belief that lies at the foundation of all of these elements.

Alongside Mi-Mi-Bi members led by co-directors Kazuyo Morita and Yuka Uchida, this work features music by Takako Minekawa, dramaturgy by Jun Tsutsui, and costumes by Manami Fukuoka.
While continuing the explorations of the company’s vibrant debut work Unseen Beauty, which not only captured audiences but also garnered wide-ranging media attention, this work brims with even more multi-layered and enigmatic implications.

Tantō is located at the far-eastern end of Toyooka City and bordered on three sides by Kyoto Prefecture. It is an area scattered with small villages, where there are stretches of beautiful fields nestled between mountains.
The area is home to many historical community theater stages that remain intact on shrine grounds. These wooden stages, dating back to the Edo era, were used for traveling kabuki performances and lively community plays put on by local residents. Tantō is also known for having had a significant impact on spirituality and culture, with many folk tales originating in the area being passed down across the ages.

Cross material and virtual worlds with up-and-coming choreographer Kornkarn Rungsawang in a performance that combines dance, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
“Mali Bucha: Dance Offering” is inspired by the 400-year-old Thai ritual Rum-Kea-Bon, where dance is a negotiation tool between human and higher beings: the most charming dancer—hired as a messenger from the people to the spirits’ realm—is able to enhance the likelihood of one’s wish fulfilment. This vernacular practice, commonly taking place at street corners, has constantly evolved and adapted itself as a social and cultural practice in Thailand.
Drawing from what is effectively a ‘people’s dance’ and a space of aspiration and spirituality, Rungsawang offers an immersive and participatory iteration of Rum-Kea-Bon, in which she acts as a choreographic interface between the material plane of the audience and the digital shrine. Flowing as a current throughout “Mali Bucha: Dance Offering” is a belief system that concerns itself with duality—economics and ecology, image and sound, old and new, the mundane and the transcendent.

In 1989, Toru Iwashita received this vibrant and positive voicemail, which sounded as if Tanikawa were giving a reading. Ever since, he has been using Mr.Tanikawa’s poem title to present silent, improvised solo dances in non-theater spaces and the outdoors. For the Toyooka Theater Festival, Iwashita stages a special edition of this performance in collaboration with musician Kazutoki Umezu. In an unadorned location without a stage or seats, audience members are invited to freely stand, sit, or move around in this improvisational space. There is no set plan between the dance and music. The two elements and the audience interact with the various things there, such as the site itself, the surrounding sounds, passersby, dogs, crows, and weave time together. What exactly do we “Be all ears” to there?

“Milky Way Station…”
The train conductor’s voice suddenly echoes in Giovanni’s ears as he solemnly looks at the night sky during the star festival.
As he travels among various constellations with his best friend Campanella in search of “true happiness,” where do the two arrive?

This performance vividly adapts Kenji Miyazawa’s classic children’s tale by focusing on the simple structure of telling a coming-of-age story about a young boy’s growth as he comes to terms with his friend’s death. Aimed towards children, a French version of this piece was created in 2011, which was followed by a Japanese version. The work also inspired the novel, The Curtain Rises.

The piece, which has toured widely at home and abroad and is enjoyed by adults and children alike, will be presented for the first time with Japanese sign language interpretation.

*How does sign language interpretation work in theaters?
It is a form of simultaneous interpretation in which the interpreter communicates in real time the dialogue and scenes using sign language. Unlike conventional sign language interpretation, the director gives instructions and the interpreter stands onstage as one of the performers to communicate the dialogue and scenes to audience members.

This action-filled musical about adolescence is set in the year 1940 during the Showa Era, when steadfast politician Takao Saito from Izushi Town lived. It tells the story of a modern-day high-school student who travels through time and discovers jazz music. Produced by Yomiuri TV, the performance premieres as a staged reading.

Burdened by the pressures of studying, high-school student Masaki listens to the jazz standard Bugle Call Rag, and is suddenly overcome with drowsiness. When he awakens, he finds himself in a jazz cafe in the year 1940, 84 years before his time. He meets Aiko, who is the same age as him, before holding a jazz concert for her father, Takao Saito. Before he knows it, he becomes swept up in the vortex of history.

This work is written and directed by Yomiuri TV’s Koichi Okamoto, with Eiji Minoda, also from Yomiuri TV serving as producer, and Oriza Hirata as co-director.
The principal roles are played by Yasunari Fujibayashi, who is currently appearing in Kamen Rider Gotchard (TV Asahi), and Sae Sakimoto who appeared in Super Invincible Class (Nippon Television). Yomiuri TV newscaster Kyozo Tatsuta plays the role of the cafe owner, while Tomomi Maruyama, who appeared in Laughing Matryoshka (TBS), takes on the role of Takao Saito. This story takes place on the island of Leyte in the Philippines at the end of World War II, when Japan was decisively losing the war.
A Japanese soldier suffering from tuberculosis is given only a handful of yams before being thrown out of his company, even being refused admission to a field hospital due to scarcity of food. Riddled with fear of starvation and enemies, he aimlessly wanders the wild fire and smoke-covered wilderness, but regains his once lost faith as he clings onto life and faces complete solitude. However, the realities he witnesses drives him to despair at every turn, and eventually, his psychological state reaches a breaking point. He is soon reunited with the soldiers he once knew and lived with, but there are facts the Japanese soldier encounters that he struggles to accept.

As he looks back on his past and recalls the truth, he gradually turns insane. Based on an ordinary man’s shocking experience of war, this story by Shohei Ooka questions the nature of murder, cannibalism, faith, and war, illustrating the consciousness and madness of humanity.

This representative work of war literature is directed by Honoh Horikawa and stars Hideki Nagai, who has captivated many with his powerful presence in numerous productions.
Together, they create a remarkable one-person show.

This work is inspired by the bestselling Japanese book Batta wo Taoshini Afurika e (Going to Africa to Defeat the Grasshoppers) written by a researcher of grasshoppers.
Intrigued by the creature, the three members of namstrops delved deeper into the subject and knew that in Japan there are 445 species of grasshoppers belonging to the same family.
They also found that katydid, which appear in Aesop’s fable The Ant and the Grasshopper, also is said to belong to one of them.

In the fable, which stresses the importance of preparing for the future, the grasshopper is told by the ant to dance through the winter, since it sang through the summer. However, Namstrops is a dance company that emphasizes thinking about things from an upside-down perspective. In this work, they reinterpret the fable as The Grasshopper and the Ants, with the hope of rediscovering how to live a joyful and blissful life, much like the cricket.

Namstrops (sportsman spelled backwards) is joined by Hong Kong-based dance company Unlock Dancing Plaza, to present a dance performance that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
