Through performances, field research, and other activities in Toyooka, they exchanged perspectives and developed new connections.

Population decline and aging, climate change and natural disasters, the transformation of local cultures through tourism, and the reconfiguration of communities amid rapid social change—these challenges are shared by regions around the world. Yet responses to them vary from place to place, and each locality is home to its own distinctive knowledge and practices.

Toyooka Theater Festival believes that these locally rooted cultural practices offer vital clues for reimagining the future of society and the performing arts. Places described as rural, remote, or peripheral are by no means marginal. Rather, they are crucial sites of practice from which new futures can be envisioned.

This year, Intersecting Peripheries places particular emphasis on our relationships with nature.

Instead of regarding nature simply as an environment or resource, the program approaches it as a network of relationships woven among human beings and other forms of existence. It turns its attention to performing traditions, rituals, bodies, memories embedded in the land, care, and community practices. Bringing together ten participants from East and Southeast Asia, this year’s program will explore how the performing arts can reconnect the local and the global through the diverse cultural practices that continue to thrive across Asia.

［Participants］

WU,HSIA-NING (Taiwan / Based in Taipei)

A member of HousePeace, working primarily with light as a medium to explore the relationships between light, space, and perception, as well as how light shapes narrative.
