Intersecting Peripheries
The Toyooka Theater Festival began in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As physical contact and mobility were restricted, and the very nature of how we connect with people and places came into question, we continuously reexamined the role of performing arts.
In particular, we believe that traditional performing arts, which have long played vital roles in communities, may offer important insights into how we might reconsider the function of contemporary performance today.
We are drawn to the sense that cultural practices in places that are neither urban nor central—regions often referred to as rural or peripheral—are deeply intertwined with global change.
Population decline and shifting social structures across East Asia and beyond, the increasing frequency of natural disasters and climate change worldwide, and the search for new ways to connect culture and society in a post-globalization era—these are the complex and rapidly evolving conditions we face.
This program is an attempt to create a space for international dialogue and collaboration that, through the medium of performing arts, reweaves the relationship between local communities and the wider world amid these turbulent transformations.
We are calling on producers, artists, researchers, and others who resonate with this perspective to join us in Toyooka—thinking, engaging, observing, and expressing together in the field.
Through field research, conversations with local residents, performances, presentations, and feedback sessions, we aim to cultivate a space where diverse experiences and perspectives intersect and enrich one another.

This year, in addition to the areas that hosted performances last year—Toyooka City, Yabu City, Kami Town, and Asago City—Shinonsen Town joins the lineup, expanding the festival to encompass the entire Tajima region.
One of the great joys of the Toyooka Theater Festival is traveling through these unique areas, each offering its own distinct character, guided by the diverse expressions of the performing arts.
We invite you to enjoy not only the performances but also the stunning nature, cuisine, and culture of the Tajima region.

▼First Program Announcement

rom world premieres debuting at Toyooka Theater Festival to highly anticipated works by acclaimed companies and artists from both Japan and abroad, this year’s lineup offers a rich and exciting selection.
Highlights include a program centered on the geisha culture of Kinosaki, a collaboration between a local citizen-based dance company and a leading Butoh artist, and an open-air performance set along the Takeno Coast.
Other programs emerge from close ties to the region, including interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers and artists.
In addition to works that will meet the expectations of dedicated performing arts fans, the festival will welcome numerous artists from across the globe through international co-productions, emerging companies, and street performances.
The full lineup—including programs in Asago City, Kami Town, and Shinonsen Town, as well as the Fringe program—will be announced on June 17.

The essence of the Toyooka Theater Festival lies in its sense of exploration.
One of the greatest attractions of the Toyooka Theater Festival is the abundance of performances, events, and cultural sites to explore and enjoy.
This year’s Directors’ Program presents a selection of works that are more ambitious and avant-garde than ever before.
At the same time, for the people of Toyooka and the Tajima region, we will continue to enrich the festival with content that remains accessible and familiar—one you can easily attend in your everyday *geta* sandals.
We offer many family-friendly performances and programs that can be enjoyed casually, and we hope you and your loved ones will have a wonderful time.
Between performances, we encourage you to indulge in the region’s renowned hot springs and savor its exquisite cuisine, curating a festival experience uniquely your own.

Five years have passed since the Toyooka Theater Festival, and many artists have visited the area, creating a rich exchange of ideas. While many were unsure of how to enjoy the festival at first, a definite change has taken place through exposure to a variety of genres of work.
Over the past five years, a wide variety of genres have been presented, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts, building new connections between the community and the artists.
I am excited to see what kind of works we will encounter this year. We are truly looking forward to presenting wonderful works in this area of rich nature and diverse history and backgrounds.
The Toyooka Theater Festival hopes to continue promoting new attractions as a place where the community and the arts come together.I am now looking forward to sharing a wonderful time with all of you.

Theater Opera “The star has no sound – Clockwork Universe -”

This year’s official program will feature the director’s first new work at the festival in two years, and a sequel to his chamber opera  “Zero,” which was performed at the Toyooka Theater Festival in 2020. This production is a co-production by the Toyooka Theater Festival,Setouchi Triennale, and Mito International Music Festival.
