Exploring new possibilities of happiness for people living in parallel worlds.
This production, inspired by the conspiracy-minded thinking that pervades our increasingly divided society, marks a new creative frontier for Yuya Nishida and his theater company, Gekidan Furosya. Arising out of their insight that conspiracy theories are mechanisms for understanding the world by connecting the “dots” of various phenomena into meaningful “lines”—that is, narratives—the play depicts people living within parallel worlds born out of their own distinct narratives.
Set in the fictional town of Gowokumachi and interweaving stories of long-separated twins, the rise and fall of a local sports team, and conflicts surrounding a mayoral election, the play explores what constitutes happiness for people inhabiting different worlds. As the latest entry in the troupe’s Collective Violence Series, which tackles themes such as tradition, power, ownership, and obsession, this comedic play illuminates our dark, uncertain times with both irony and poignancy.
