- Hideto Iwai
Playwright, director, and producer. Representative Director of WARE Inc.
In 2012, he received the 30th Kuniko Mukoda Award for the NHK BS drama Umu to Umareru Sorekara no Koto. In 2013, he was awarded the 57th Kishida Kunio Drama Award for his play A Woman.
His major works, including Te, Hikki—Soto ni Detemitano, The World Is One, and Otoko-tachi, have been performed both in Japan and internationally. His works have also received high acclaim overseas, including a production in Seoul, South Korea, that won three major theater awards.
In 2020, he launched Ikinari Hon-Yomi!, a live entertainment project in which actors bring a story to life by reading a script they are seeing for the first time, right there in front of the audience. The project has gained widespread popularity and continues to be presented at theaters across Japan. In recent years, he also established the Ikinari Hon-Yomi! Script Award, focusing on discovering and nurturing new playwrights.
He also leads Wareware no Moromoro, a theater workshop in which participants create original works based on their own experiences. The workshops have been held in communities across Japan and implemented in a wide range of settings, including schools, local governments, businesses, and medical and welfare institutions. The program has been highly regarded as an original method for encouraging dialogue between people and fostering self-understanding.
Under the theme “Theater, beyond theater,” he continues to expand the possibilities of theater beyond the creation of works for the stage, bringing theatrical practices into diverse fields including education, community development, healthcare, and corporate training.

A hugely popular live documentary in which actors read through scripts they are seeing for the first time.
“Read It !! -Sudden script reading” is not a performance that simply presents a finished work. It is a live documentary that invites the audience to share the very moment when actors first encounter their characters and gradually become one with them.
At the beginning of the performance, the actors may misread a kanji or misunderstand a character’s gender. These unexpected moments remind us that actors are people too, and the audience is invited to enjoy these discoveries alongside them. But gradually, the laughter gives way to focused creative work. As the actors connect with one another, they begin to embody the characters in the script, bringing the story to life right before the audience’s eyes.
The creative process itself remains open to the audience. Conversations with the director and discussions about how to interpret lines and characters unfold in real time, allowing the audience to witness a unique moment of theatrical creation as it happens.
The moment when a character takes possession of an actor. The moment when a story comes into being. Documentary and entertainment unfold simultaneously, offering an entirely new kind of theatrical experience—one in which the world of the script and the process of creating it exist side by side.
Whether you are a seasoned theatergoer or visiting a theater for the first time, come and experience the fresh surprises and excitement of “Read It !! -Sudden script reading”.
