“At Kinosaki” is a “reading performance” of a newly translated version of the short story by writer Naoya Shiga, based on his trip to the Kinosaki hot springs for medical treatment. A new English translation by Ted Goossen was published in February 2024 as a beautiful art book, accompanied by photographer Rinko Kawauchi’s images of the town.

We now present an English reading performance based on this text, with Masashi Nukata from Nuthmique directing and composing music.

The story revolves around a writer who, upon experiencing a near-fatal accident, comes to a quiet hot spring town and observes the contours of life and death as he takes in the nature.

Even in translation, Naoya Shiga’s writing leaves readers with a refreshing and universal impression that transcends time and borders.

Masashi Nukata

Masashi Nukata is a composer, director, and playwright who leads the theater company Nuthmique and the contemporary pop band Tokyo Shiokouji. Interrogating the very notion of performance, he presents works that expand the framework of the performing arts.

Books and Onsen

Books and Onsen is a publishing label launched by the Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan Management Study Group (or Second-Generation Association) in 2013 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Naoya Shiga’s visit to the hot springs. With an aim to produce the “hot spring literature” of the next century, they have published five books to date that have sold a total of nearly 80,000 copies, despite their exclusive sales in Kinosaki Onsen. Playful and full of surprises, they plan to expand their collection beyond novels to encompass all kinds of forms:picture book, photo collections, and more.
