Composer/artist Neil Lack (London) and artist/sound designer Masamitsu Araki (Kyoto) share a commonality in their humorous explorations of the “creativity of listening” and the “boundaries between sound and music,” creating site-specific performances that incorporate the characteristics of the place.
For this performance, the two artists will stay and create their work in the Takenohama district, located in the San’in Kaigan National Park and historically prosperous as a port of call for Kitamae ships, and will create a wandering sound performance in collaboration with local residents and students who have been recruited through public entries.
Using the unique sounds that abound in the region, from the natural sounds of the sea and mountains to the sounds of everyday life, they will create an environment in which the audience can rediscover the act of “listening.”
After checking in at Kitamae Hall, audience members will wander freely around the town with a map in hand, experiencing a one-of-a-kind “sound environment” created together by the town of Takeno, the artists, and the participants.
Stop along the way, take your time, and listen to the sounds of the town.
