“Sensible Activities” is an ongoing project by London-based composer/artist Neil Luck, presented in places around the world, including at the Kinosaki International Arts Center in October 2024. Departing from passive modes of “listening” shaped by edited sound and music, the project seeks to transform perception through an active, performative approach using exercises and scores/instructions.

For the Toyooka Theater Festival, Luck collaborates with Kyoto-based artist Masamitsu Araki to create and present a roaming sound performance in the Takeno-hama area, working together with local residents and students.

Situated within the San’in Kaigan National Park and once a thriving port of call for Kitamae-bune trading ships, Takeno-hama layers the natural sounds of sea, mountains, and river with the noises of daily life. After checking in at Kitamaekan, audiences receive a map and wander through the town, experiencing a one-time-only “soundscape” brought into being by the environment, the artists, and the performers.

You may join at any time during the performance window and take it at your own pace—feel free to linger, make detours, and spend time listening closely.

Masamitsu Araki

Artist, musician, sound designer. Born 1981 in Yamagata, Japan. Lives and works in Kyoto.
While music is the subject of his activities, he takes standing on its periphery as a starting point, humorously pursuing the creativity of listening and re-connecting it with music to encourage a reconsideration of context and utility. The soundscape constructed through their unique interpretation and process utilizes sound, video, voice, site-specific elements and environments, and is presented in a wide variety of forms, including theater pieces, installations, performances, tours, and sound sources, but in general, they aim to drift along the boundaries of “sound-music” by breaking down the totality of sound surrounding us from a familiar perspective The aim is to drift along the boundary of “sound-music” that can be seen by observing the totality of sound that surrounds us from a familiar point of view.
Araki is also active as a member of NEW MANUKE, a music group.
