- Gaki no Danjiki
Founded in 2021 by Tomoki Kawamura, the company is known for its plays that sharply depict the structures of contemporary society through the everyday conversations of young people, often infused with Kansai dialect slang.
Kawamura’s distinctive directorial style combines exaggerated yet visceral physical expression, grounded in meticulous observation.
In recent years, his work has expanded to include dance pieces and performances that explore the dynamic relationship between people and objects.
In 2025, he was selected for “KIPPU,” the U35 Creative Support Program organized by ROHM Theatre Kyoto and Kyoto Art Center, and received the Best Director Award at the 2023 Kansai Theater Festival.

There is a body, a floor, and a drum set.
A speaker stands tangled in messy cables, while scripts and music loudly announce their claim to connection.
An overdecorated, overinflated environment demands I jump in — yet the body refuses.
Was it me who wavered, thrown off by the endless repetition of that act?(!) — Minutes, July 5, 2025
Gaki no Danjiki presents its first-ever dance production as the second installment of its “Tricking” series, which explores physical expression and movement as extensions of acting.
Titled “STUDY”, this piece was not created to belong solely to Gaki no Danjiki, but was conceived as a shared performance platform across genres and groups.
Through fieldwork and research conducted throughout Japan, the project seeks to generate
a performative language that captures the physicality of present day Japanese —
and the environments that seek to constrain or erase them.
—The environment welcomes modifier. But my body, somehow, does not.
