The concept known as “Superlinear” explores an excess of information and perspectives, and the sedimentation of “time” generated by different media.
Drawing on this conceptual framework, Sung Nam HAN has been developing time-based art performances that interweave video, theater, and dance.
In this latest work, a teacher appears who teaches Japanese as a peripheral language—one in which the “center” has been erased—amidst an interplay of light and darkness. The sound of the viola, resembling the human voice, is embodied as a dog, and drones and cameras inhabit the space as autonomous presences.
These elements are barely held in control, as a play without parole—a visualized thought experiment that explores the respective differentials of meaning and instruction.
