“A Residency Journey Through the Stages of Tanto”

Rika Megumi

Area

  • Tanto

Date and Time

Residency Period: Sep.19(Fri) – Sep.24(Wed)

It is believed that ancient Japanese performing arts developed significantly through influences from performance traditions brought over from China and the Korean Peninsula. One such art form is sangaku, often considered a precursor to modern juggling. The diabolo, the prop I specialize in, is said to have originated as a performance tool used in these early sangaku performances.
Why have these performing arts, though transformed over the centuries, continued to survive to this day? Why has something that began as a simple form of entertainment not disappeared with time, but instead been passed down through generations into the modern era?

Tanto is home to many Shinto shrines, and within their precincts are rural stages where traveling performers and local farmers once held plays and performances. Many of these traditional stages still remain today. During my stay here, I will create a new diabolo piece that draws inspiration from these historic stages while incorporating modern techniques.

In the flow of time shaped by nature, history, and human life, what do I—living in the present—feel and choose to express? The result of this creative journey will be captured in the form of a video, which will be shared at a later date.
