The Seinendan Theatre Company and the Osaka University Robot Theatre Project present The Metamorphosis, Android Version, the culmination of a robotic theater collaboration between playwright Oriza Hirata and roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro. The production is based on the novella by Franz Kafka but replaces the original insect with an android. In so doing, it reexamines fundamental themes such as human existence, labor, and familial relationships within the context of modern society. Originally commissioned for the performing arts festival Autumn in Normandy, the French-language version premiered in 2014 and starred the acclaimed French actress Irène Jacob, receiving rave reviews at home and abroad. Its subsequent tours overseas and in Japan have continued to earn international acclaim. For this performance, the script, originally written with French-language performances in mind, has been completely revised and reconstructed into a Japanese-language version. With the setting moved to near-future Japan, the story addresses issues that will feel pressing to contemporary audiences.
