“With My Dad’s Wonderfully Useless Ideas” is a solo dance work by choreographer and dancer Airi Suzuki, created through the traces left by her father, Takashi Suzuki, who passed away when she was ten years old: his voice, home videos, notes, idea books, photographs, and unfinished ideas.
At the center of this work is the theme of “the revival of the father’s presence.” For Suzuki, her father had existed for more than thirty years as an absence. However, through the process of touching the archives he left behind, listening to memories shared by her mother and her father’s friends, and allowing his words and ideas to pass through her body, her father gradually changes from someone confined to the past into a presence that lives again within her present self.
On stage, Suzuki performs alone. Yet the space is never truly empty. Her father’s voice, images, notes, and objects appear like invisible partners. Her body responds to them, plays with them, hesitates before them, and attempts an impossible dialogue with her father across time.
