- Hydroblast
Founded in 2019 by film director and actor Shingo Ota, Hydroblast is a collective dedicated to creating works of film and theater. In 2022, actor Kyoko Takenaka joined the team as a producer. Grounded in documentary-based approaches, they determine roles according to each project, aiming to create works through a multifaceted lens. Notable works include “Watashitachi ni yurusareta tokubetsu na jikan” and “Fragile,” both directed by Ota, as well as the performance pieces “The Last Geishas” and “Care and Acting.

Are geishas merely a tourist icon, or do they represent the embodiment of a craft passed down through centuries? With such inquiries in mind, artists Shingo Ota and Kyoko Takenaka trained under the so-called “last geisha” to learn about the culture firsthand. Accompanied by the music of guitarist Kazuhisa Uchihashi, this documentary-style performance investigates what it means to inherit and carry on a craft.
