“Living statues” is a genre of performance known as “statue performance” in Japan. Disguising themselves as “figures”—whether they be statues made of stone or other materials, dolls, or broader representations recalling contemporary art—performers quietly stand still and entertain the audience, at times using performance techniques such as dance or pantomime, or showcasing unexpected gimmicks.
What largely distinguishes the art form from other genres is how the performer remains “static” to create the piece. Its allure draws from the fact that living statue performances can be enjoyed by people of all ages and nationalities due to its non-verbal nature, and that it can be staged in various places that may have been restricted in the past, such as museums and theaters.
Another positive aspect of living statue performance is that it does not require any technical or physical strength, unlike acrobatics or juggling. This allows anyone—from children to the elderly—to participate as “performers.”
